1920's- Anti alien sentiment
During the period of Red Terror after World War 2, many Americans were extremely fearful of foreigners. They believed that the communists would come into America and take over the democratic country. This political cartoon critizes those who attack foreigners for no apparent reason. They claim to be helping the nation but they actually are violating the rights of there people. This political cartoon suggests that these government monsters who capture innocent foreigners are no better than Hitler himself, (the man on the right looks very much like Hitler). The business man's foot is blocking further ships from coming into America, alluding to the Quota Act and the Immigration Act. Investigators with spy glasses are searching for immigrants. This alludes to the Sacco and Venzetti case, where Sacco and Venzetti were convicted and found guilty mostly because of their italian heritage. The men running away on the bottom left are holding a sickle and hammer, the sign of the soviet union. The woman on the upper right hand corner is quietly knitting, only watching the scene. This alludes to the idea that women did not contribute much.
